I usually print about 1,000 fliers and pay a company about .15 cents per flier to deliver them. I usually get a couple of calls from that. Nothing overwhelming. The other low cost option is Craigslist. It works okay. It’s just flooded with other “price based” cleaning services so it’s hard to stand out as a service leader which costs a little more than the guys that advertise that they’ll clean your whole house for $20 bucks!
You might try developing leads through specialty clients. For example, you could visit local building contractors and talk to them about doing the carpet cleaning when they complete new houses or repairs to existing buildings. You could set up meetings with condo boards, apartment complex managers and retail center owners to either do their work or offer to catch overflow work when their regular service isn’t available.
Since winter is approaching, try a new marketing strategy. Something like how carpet cleaning helps to reduce allergens collected during the spring and summer months and helps medical conditions like asthma and other lung problems. Leave fliers around close to pediatricians, OB/GYN offices and hospitals, stressing how carpet cleaning can reduce possible allergies in infants. Pet and pet supply stores are another possibility since pets often leave unwanted “gifts” on the carpet.
Try to come up with new ways to stress why people should get their carpets cleaned regularly and then network with other businesses who cater to the effected segments of the population. At the same time, do a little research into why the products you use are better than those discount services who cut costs by using less effective cleaners, etc. Stress your bonding, licensing, etc. on any advertising.

Referral business is the way to go. Do a good job at a fair price and ask your customers to refer you- you can even offer a discount on future business with a referral. After you clean a job, leave something in the neighborhood mailboxes saying you just cleaned at xx address and telling them about your services.
