I have recently started an SAT instruction/tutoring business in the Los Angeles area.
Regarding my background, I am a college student with a 2390 out of 2400 on the SAT. I am working with a couple of friends on this project. Both of them have perfect scores. I am also an instructor at the Princeton Review.
Not to boast, but I feel that the courses we will teach will be at a far higher level than any existing test prep company out there. There is really no other company with instructors that have perfect scores, and this is our competitive advantage. We have the coursework and everything all planned out.
All we need to do is market now. I am hoping to market via the internet or in person. Our advertising budget is very low, like $1000 (that's all we could really afford). Any good ideas?
I do have a quality laser printer that I could print off flyers with and a lot of colorful paper…

Call a reporter for the local newspaper and ask if she will interview you. If that works, offer to go on the local tv station morning show at 6am. Offer to answer questions on-air from students or parents..

ok. fist of all be careful. just because you are smart and you have a really good theoretical background, that does not mean that you will be a good teacher. my university is full of p.h.ds that can't teach.
you have a strong team, and that is really good, but don't be arrogant thinking that everyone will toss money at you just because you guys have good grades.
market yourself on the quality of the teachers and the quality your course if that is what you plan to deliver and market youself specially in the fact that you will solve a problem to your costumer (that is making them get good grades)
as the way to market yourself, i would stay away from the internet because internet and education always sound like a scam.
you have to advertise only where your target market will see it. Who is your target market? high school students trying to get better grades? then advertise nearby highschools even on bus stops around it, if you don't have much starting money
or try talking to the teachers and ask if you can come by their class one day and do a lecture on some of the content of your course. that is great advertisement with credibility

Congratulations for your achievement!
Your credentials will be your advantage against competition. I believe in that because as parent I would rather choose to have quality tutors for my child.
About your question of marketing your business with $1000 budget, I would suggest that you and your partners look for a company who offers custom banners and signs. In this way you can have variety of advertising tool like vertical banners, horizontal banners, feather flags, stock banners, etc. You can also have hang-ups to announce that you are open for business. Try visiting http://www.t3signdesign.com, they offer a wide range of custom banners, signs and even stands at reasonable prices. They even give discounts.
